About the Hermanator

In 2019, my life changed in an instant when I was diagnosed with acute leukemia. In the chaos of hospital rooms and uncertainty, I started writing. I wrote at breakneck speed—partly to process the fear, and partly to stay connected to the world outside.

My readers began calling me "The Hermanator." It started as a nod to the grit and survival required to face cancer, but it has grown into something much more. It represents the part of all of us that refuses to give up, even when the odds are stacked against us.

A New Chapter: Live On!

After winning that battle and publishing a book about the journey, I found myself at a crossroads. I realized I didn't want to be the "eternal patient" forever. I wanted a clean slate.

This blog is that fresh start. Inspired by the words "Live on!"—a command I discovered carved into the sand of a South African beach—I write about:

  • Identity: Who are we when our old life disappears?

  • Resilience: How do we find the "relentless" spirit to keep moving?

  • Perspective: Finding the lightheartedness in the heavy moments of life and death.

  • The Everyday: Observations on the world around us, seen through a lens that knows how precious time is.

I’m no longer just writing a survival guide; I’m writing about what it means to truly live.

Whether you’ve been here since the first hospital post or you’re just joining me now: I’m glad you’re here. Let’s live on.
